It Started With a Simple Vision.
On April 1st, 1955, R.T. started his plumbing & HVAC company in the basement of his house on Norwaldo Street, located not far from the Indianapolis fairgrounds. His vision was simple: provide customers with quality services at a fair price. It was a family business, where R.T.’s dad ran the warehouse & tool room at 30th & Georgetown Road, and everyone called him "Grandpa". There was a pot belly stove in the barn that grandpa would use to heat the building. He also had a garden out back where he grew the ingredients for his special rhubarb pie. Grandpa also handled the scrap copper, weighed scraps in the basement and sold all scraps…nothing was left to waste. Grandpa ran the shop until 1965 when he retired. R.T. and his father’s simple approach to business built a strong reputation with the customers and suppliers that was based on fairness and quality.

On the Move.
Through the 60’s, R.T. Moore experienced solid growth that resulted in multiple moves and facility additions to support the expanding business. R.T. Moore added more staff, trucks and equipment. During this time the Company added new services for its customers including expanding to out of state contract work. R.T. Moore continued to build its reputation as a quality plumbing and heating contractor that resulted in growth with existing customers and the addition of new customers.

Challenging Times, Big Changes.
The early 70’s brought a variety of challenges to the Company. Declining business due to difficult economic conditions, customers who could not pay their bills, and a realization that the Company lacked the systems to properly manage the high growth it had experienced over the past decade created significant threats to the business. However, these difficult times also demonstrated the strong loyalty that R.T. had developed with his employees and business relationships over the years. The Company scaled back operations, capped growth, and focused for the next several years on developing and implementing systems to better manage the business and control waste. The leadership team was trimmed from 7 people down to 2. In order to stay in business R.T. made agreements with his suppliers to pay down debt over a 2 year period. Without the strong relationships and loyalty he had formed over the years, this would not have been possible. R.T., true to his word, actually paid back his debt in 1 year. R.T.’s sons, Doug and Tom, began working in the warehouse and field during the summers and Christmas breaks in order to learn the business.

A New Decade of Opportunity.
The 1980’s brought health back to the industry and opportunity to R.T. Moore. The investments the Company had made in developing more organized systems paid off and the company began to grow again…30% per year! The Company also went through significant changes. Doug purchased the company in 1985 and was named President. The Company outgrew its facility and moved to the current location on La Pas Trail in Indianapolis. R.T. Moore added design and build capabilities after Doug received his Professional Engineers stamp which opened up more opportunity for business growth. Throughout the 80’s and 90’s R.T. Moore expanded its customer base and extended its business into two primary industries: residential and multi-family. The Company had not only learned how to survive difficult times but also how to respond to changing market conditions and capitalize on new opportunities to grow the business.

R.T. Moore Today.
Today, R.T. Moore has established itself as one of the country’s premier mechanical contractors providing residential plumbing and sewer/water installations in Indiana and Florida as well as plumbing and HVAC services for the multi-family industry across 16 states. We have expertise in apartments, military housing, assisted living, student housing and light commercial. We have licensed engineers on staff (including our owner, Doug Moore), giving us the ability to provide our customers with complete design/build capability. This depth in experience allows us to develop strategic relationships with our customers where we can adapt to their changing needs and provide them with exceptional value and quality they can trust. Most recently, we have become certified in system design and installation of variable refrigerant technology that is quickly expanding to a variety of applications in the multi-family and light commercial industries. With the current economic climate we find ourselves in, our focus on continual improvement that increases our value to our customers is even more critical.
